Describe the work including planned media, size and presentation format. (All art forms are accepted for this call, but there must be a physical representation of the work ready for display. Most often this is a framed and ready-to-hang two dimensional image.)

My work will be on a basic 12×16 stretched canvas. It will be an oil painting and will probably have a semi-gloss varnish. I did not plan to frame this since it is a think canvas, but will see what I can do if needed! Please let me know. PLEASE NOTE: the image attached is an image of both my “rough draft” (left) and the beginning stages (under painting) of the final piece (right). I will only be submitting the final piece once finished.

Describe your contemplative practice in relation to the work so far.

For this piece I curated some pictures of ocean waves and sharks as references, and I did a couple of rough practice pieces to experiment with composition and colors before starting the real thing. Truthfully, I’ve struggled with consistency with my regular contemplative practices recently and have mostly just been working hard at being gentle with myself. I’ve been doing weekly check-ins with myself ever since I finished the Artist’s Way earlier this year, and in them I usually talk about how I’m doing on my goals pertaining to painting output and various projects. Recently, I haven’t met 100% of any of those goals, haha, but I’ve come a long way in terms of accepting setbacks, having patience, and building confidence in myself and my art practice.

Describe your engagement with nature in relation to this work so far.

With this piece and the themes of this book, I find myself thinking about my own relationship with nature. The moment this piece is meant to capture, is the type of moment I look for every time I take a walk outside. A moment so rare and awe-inspiring that makes me feel like something more than lucky to witness it.

Describe your engagement with the text in relation to this work so far.

Something about Anne’s writing brings me back to those moments of wonder, of almost child-like intrigue and fascination. Probably because I grew up watching bugs for entertainment and playing in my own creek as a kid. I hope this piece can somewhat capture that kind of wonderment.

What questions, or primary question, have arisen for you in pursuing the work so far?

I have been asking myself what I want to say with my art – what specific moments I want to capture and feelings I want to evoke. And of course how to balance my ambition for artistic growth with my need for rest.

What have you learned in the process so far?

That moments of contemplation and connection with nature are very important to my creative process, and that it is mandatory to make time for them in order to reach my greater goals.

If applicable, please describe any challenges that will prevent you from participating in the effort or completing the project on time.

I do not forsee any challenges other than maybe drying time and framing the piece if that’s required. But I’m feeling good about finishing the piece soon enough that drying time shouldn’t be an issue.
