Describe the work including planned media, size and presentation format. (All art forms are accepted for this call, but there must be a physical representation of the work ready for display. Most often this is a framed and ready-to-hang two dimensional image.)

This quilt will be approximately 24 x 36 inches, it is botanically printed and dyed with plants, made with cotton fabric and cotton batting. It will be ready to hang on the wall as a two dimensional piece.

Describe your contemplative practice in relation to the work so far.

My contemplative practice has consisted of walks along the river, moments watering the garden, and sitting on the porch. My goal has been presence while being in nature. As the temperatures turn colder, I have enjoyed watching the colors of the leaves turn and the falling of black walnuts and chestnuts. I have been contemplating the changing of the seasons, the play of light and shadow, and the observations of Annie Dillard while making this work.

Describe your engagement with nature in relation to this work so far.

As of now, this work has turned into an ode to black walnuts. The central fabric to the quilt is a fascinating stain of black walnut dye printed on the cloth. The surrounding triangles of fabric, forming a star, are printed with black walnut leaves. I have been thinking about the power of life found in one seed– the potential energy within. The additional pieces of fabric are printed with leaves found along Tinker Creek and SW VA– this cloth is dyed with colors that remind me of Virginia seasons. I am trying to play with complementary colors of yellow and purple, with indigo skies, and forest greens, accompanying the central black walnut brown. My goal is to bring light to the dark.

Describe your engagement with the text in relation to this work so far.

I have started reading Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, it has inspired my goal of presence. I aim to “see” and “be” with the nature that exists in my everyday life. It reminds me that we are nature and nature is us. It has also made me notice how technology often blocks the ‘noticing’ and the ‘presence’ necessary for experiencing the trickle of spirit that nature brings.

What questions, or primary question, have arisen for you in pursuing the work so far?

If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Just kidding!

But similarly, does Nature share its magic if we are not there to experience it? Is it possible to capture this energy? By making this work, will the power of Nature be felt?

It was surely caught and shared by Dillard– I am excited to see the nature and experiences presented in this show.

What have you learned in the process so far?

I have learned that Nature is the original Artist. It is alive in every sense and it has so much to share. I’ve also learned the power of presence and the importance of observing what nature has to share. This has been a wonderful experience so far.

If applicable, please describe any challenges that will prevent you from participating in the effort or completing the project on time.

I will complete the project on time!
