Describe the work including planned media, size and presentation format. (All art forms are accepted for this call, but there must be a physical representation of the work ready for display. Most often this is a framed and ready-to-hang two dimensional image.)

This painting will be completed in watercolor on paper at approximately an 11×14 size. It will be framed.

Describe your contemplative practice in relation to the work so far.

My final painting will be completed in my studio, but it was important to me to draw direct inspiration from Tinker Creek. For this project I visited the creek three times at Tinker Creek at Hollins trail to Carvins Cove, Mason Mill Park, and the surrounding greenway sections near Mason Mill. I brought my nature journal, paints, and a foldable chair (which I forgot one time and ended up sitting on rocks and tree roots). Once I found a particular spot along the creek that spoke to me, I settled in and began sketching and observing. Because I was out of my studio and in this location, I could focus solely on the creek, the dragonflies, and what I might want to paint. The only times I pulled out my phone were to get photo reference or to identify a species. I have done this sort of painting/sketching before and have always found it relaxing and nice.

Describe your engagement with nature in relation to this work so far.

I am a wildlife artist so I knew that whatever I landed on for painting, nature and the species I observed were going to be a part of it. While sketching I sat on roots or rocks next to or within the creek; I observed and identified many species of dragonflies, plants, and fungi; and because I sat still in one location for stretches of time, many birds – mallards, American Robins, a Spotted Sandpiper, and a Yellow-crowned Night Heron – forgot that I was present and foraged and bathed nearby.

Describe your engagement with the text in relation to this work so far.

While sketching and thinking, I finished reading A Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. One of the moments that spoke to me the most was Dillard talking about becoming a part of the landscape while in her efforts to see a muskrat. I have often found that when I silently sit or stand still, much of the local wildlife forgets that I am present (or ignores me) and continues on as if I weren’t there. Granted, I’ve not seen a muskrat in years, but this has worked pretty well with birds thus far.

What questions, or primary question, have arisen for you in pursuing the work so far?

The main driving question for me was what species I wanted to focus on. My initial sketches (not included in the provided photo) were of Tinker Creek itself. I am less confident in my landscape work and so decided to pivot to focusing instead on a species that I observed calling Tinker Creek home. I spent a lot of time wandering, observing, and thinking before I landed what I showed in the photo.

What have you learned in the process so far?

I have learned what many of our common non-bird species are! I was able to identify multiple species of dragonflies, plants, and fungi. Some of these will make a showing in the final painting.

If applicable, please describe any challenges that will prevent you from participating in the effort or completing the project on time.

I don’t anticipate any challenges popping up.
