Describe the work including planned media, size and presentation format. (All art forms are accepted for this call, but there must be a physical representation of the work ready for display. Most often this is a framed and ready-to-hang two dimensional image.)

Gallery wrapped painted canvas, already complete construction with hardware to hang. The painting, however, is about 75% done and will still include caring on birds to add to the theme in the mood. The composition is of a male deer contemplating his death. While we don’t really know If these animals have thoughts about the inevitability of death the book touches on the subject several times.

Describe your contemplative practice in relation to the work so far.

I read the book and visited both tinkers creek and cliffs in an effort to fully understand the project and become engaged in the ideas behind the book.

Describe your engagement with nature in relation to this work so far.

Whenever I paint, I find myself drawing on my previous experience with hiking, the outdoors and nature since so much of my work IS nature based. It flows out of me as easily as good conversation with an old friend. But in this case I also used pictures I had taken of trees and the creek while hiking in preparation for this piece.

Describe your engagement with the text in relation to this work so far.

So much of book was read a few chapters at a time before bed, hoping the perfect idea for a painting would strike me. I would get the glimmer of an idea but nothing that demanded paint. It wasn’t until I actually went out to the creek and fully felt what Annie Dillard was inspired by, being in the present and fully immersed in the natural world around me that her words had more meaning. The death of a frog made her question life on a level that shows how deeply she was connected, plugged into the world both death and life. Most people would see a dying frog and no more. My family and I stumbled upon a box turtle very sick and hopefully no where near as close to death, that we took to a wildlife rehabilitation center. The poor guy was so many decades old, large and battle scared to think he could be on the brink after years of extreme living though droughts and floods, animal attacks and brutal winters I was both beautiful and sad. It made me wonder if animal’s contemplate death in any sort of a way we can understand as humans.

What questions, or primary question, have arisen for you in pursuing the work so far?

How to settle on a medium or painting that would fit. I went back-and-forth throughout the book and eventually settled on one but I still have so many more ideas for this project.

What have you learned in the process so far?

That self contemplation is nearly impossible when you have high maintenance children 24/7

If applicable, please describe any challenges that will prevent you from participating in the effort or completing the project on time.

None that I can foresee
