| Describe the work including planned media, size and presentation format. (All art forms are accepted for this call, but there must be a physical representation of the work ready for display. Most often this is a framed and ready-to-hang two dimensional image.) | My painting is approximately 18×24 and is crafted with fabric and oils. It will be framed in wood. |
| Describe your contemplative practice in relation to the work so far. | I like to maintain a quiet, thoughtful practice in the studio, free from distractions. Now that I have completed the framework for my painting and begun to paint my subjects in, I plan to visit the creek for further study. |
| Describe your engagement with nature in relation to this work so far. | I’ve visited Tinker Creek, and once the weather cools down, I plan to visit more often. In the meantime, it is quiet time in the studio. No phone, radio, or television. Only the sounds of traffic in the distance, birds, and chattering squirrels. |
| Describe your engagement with the text in relation to this work so far. | Annie Dillard wrote about an interaction with a green frog one day and how it became the victim of a giant water bug. She described how she slowed down to notice the creature, and I have been struck by how close she was to it and the details with which she writes about it. |
| What questions, or primary question, have arisen for you in pursuing the work so far? | So far, my main question has been “Why did I take on such a difficult subject matter?” However, the image of these turtles has stayed with me since I first saw them, and I find them amusing. |
| What have you learned in the process so far? | I’ve learned a little bit about the Painted Turtles of Virginia. They inhabit creeks and like to sunbathe on logs, which is how I came upon them on a greenway walk one day. |
| If applicable, please describe any challenges that will prevent you from participating in the effort or completing the project on time. | Not applicable |
