Describe the completed work, including media, size and presentation format. (All art forms are accepted for this call, but there must be a physical representation of the work ready for display. Most often this is a framed and ready-to-hang two dimensional image.)

This piece is inspired by Annie Dillard’s affection for muskrats in her Pulitzer Prize winning novel, “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek”. Specifically, the location of Tinker Creek in the painting was painted live from where Annie Dillard described her interaction with a muskrat in Chapter 11: “Stalking”, over in the neighborhood across from Hollins College.

This piece of art was achieved using acrylic paint, and is approximately 6x9inches on a canvas panel.

Please reflect on how your contemplative practice informed or helped shape the work.

I was able to spend time by Tinker Creek, meditating and communing with nature, thusly inspiring this piece of art.

Please reflect on how your deeper exploration of nature informed or helped shape the work.

I was determined to go find the exact location I believed the description of her muskrat “stalking” to have taken place. Eventually finding the right spot became the background of this piece.

Please reflect on how your engagement with the text of PILGRIM AT TINKER CREEK informed or helped shape the work.

Reading “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek” with fellow members of the community in early 2025 was pinnacle in shaping this piece of art.

What questions has this work prompted you to explore next?

Would I really have to wait as long, and be as still as Annie Dillard to have any hope of actually ever seeing a muskrat in Tinker Creek?

What did you learn in the process?

I learned that having a genuine interest/intrigue about the subject matter ALWAYS increases the success of the artwork.

This is an original work and I have identified all technology used in the creation of this work in the description of my process above. My typed name stands for my signature.Kaydee Pickle
