Describe the completed work, including media, size and presentation format. (All art forms are accepted for this call, but there must be a physical representation of the work ready for display. Most often this is a framed and ready-to-hang two dimensional image.)

“Hidden in Plain Sight” is a three-dimensional hand forged and welded steel sculpture. It depicts Roanoke Virginia natives Pickerel Frog and Orange Eastern Amberwing on an American White Water Lily. It stands 30″ tall by 12″ wide by 12″ deep. Double primed and painted with industrial oil paint in a realistic palette. I’m an old school fabricator, no computer driven AI art here. What you see, I have drawn, cut, and welded by hand.

Please reflect on how your deeper exploration of nature informed or helped shape the work.

I have hiked and canoed all over the U.S. and Canada, but I have always enjoyed exploring my home state of “Virginia” the most. This project gave me a reason to research lots of Roanoke’s plants and animals. It was difficult to select only a few to focus on for this sculpture.

Please reflect on how your engagement with the text of PILGRIM AT TINKER CREEK informed or helped shape the work.

The plants and animals I used represented the wonder and diversity of nature. The sculpture is intended to represent the varying elements of the earth. The dragonfly lives in the air, the water lily lives in the water, the cattails live on the land, and the frog goes between them all.

What questions has this work prompted you to explore next?

I think I would enjoy making a series of small sculptures to represent all three regions of Virginia. (Tidewater, Piedmont, and Mountain)

What did you learn in the process?

My love for the wonders of nature has been reinforced. I was born and raised in Virginia and I had no idea that Virginia has a poisonous frog the “Pickerel Frog”.
