Please describe the outcomes of your activity. What did you learn? What made you the most proud of the effort?

The whole event was really lovely and warm. Neighbors of all ages chatted and ate pancakes together with home grown cut flowers in vases at each table. There were more people interested in portraits than there was time. It was nice that people seemed really interested in having their own portrait. Several people participated by just watching the portrait painting process.

I learned that there are so many really kind people that live in the City of Roanoke. It makes me love Roanoke more.

I’m proud that the portraits seemed to serve as both entertainment and a way for people to connect with each other. I feel honored to have been a part of this event! I think there was one guy who came to the party for the first time because he wanted his portrait painted- I’m so glad and happy for that.

From your perspective, what would be a good next step for the neighborhood in building engagement and momentom?

It could be cool to expand the event over a couple of front yards. I think a drum circle could have been really awesome- I bet the kids would love that. Maybe a kiddie pool? Maybe invite more of a potluck situation? Honestly it looked to me like they really have it figured out- it ran so smoothly and everyone seemed really happy even though it was a really hot day. Overall just a great early morning party. It inspired me to try to do something similar in my neighborhood.
