Please describe the outcomes of your activity. What did you learn? What made you the most proud of the effort?

“The Heart ♥️ of the Drum” – ‘Roo Sunshine’/ Mr. Rudy (local elder, woodworking artist, & ‘spiritual drummer’) sharing wisdom with the Apple Ridge Farm+ Camp youth about drumming as therapy 🟢🫶🟢 and YES we responded to the call of the drum through movement, guided by myself! And learned this powerful tradition helps us process & regulate our emotions- heighten positive energy! What a blast! Many of the children expressed their sentiments and impressions directly, and the word “inspired” came out of their own mouths more than once, as well as “How do you do that with your hands?!” Referring to the dancing of Mr Roo’s hands on the drum 😄❤️

I thank BJ Lark, Robin Mitchell for facilitating and Mr. Roo (Rudy) for co-hosting.

From your perspective, what would be a good next step for the neighborhood in building engagement and momentom?

Let’s repeat this in connection with our other West African Dance workshops. The kids loved getting the mentoring from a wise grandfather like figure- loved getting their hands on the drum, and we all loved our sound and movement together!
