Services provided (details of agreement)

Since 2015, Mill Mountain Theatre (MMT) has been the performing arts partner in a collaborative community effort to raise reading skills of Roanoke Valley students. In 2023 we expanded the program to address pandemic learning loss among young teenagers, And in 2024 the same program will add sensory friendly performances of some productions to give access to children and teenagers with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other behavioral challenges, MMT’s participation in these efforts was solicited by area school administrators and parents. Grade-level reading by the end of third grade is the key factor in determining success in higher grades, on-time graduation from high school and wider career options. MMT’s response, supported by local and national grantors, was to link our Young Audiences plays to literary sources and give free books to children who see the performances. MMT builds literacy skills by engaging children through plays based on fables, classic children’s stories and popular culture. We capture their interest during performances and provide related books that encourage summer reading and more visits to libraries. We measure the impact through Survey Monkey questionnaires. In 2023, MMT engaged 13,438 students and their families at 90 Young Audiences performances and gave them 1,194 books related to the shows. In recent years we have performed plays and given books that are bilingual to serve students from the growing number of Latino households in our community. The 2023 schedule included two touring shows, one still focused on young children to encourage reading, and a second tour aimed at middle-school students and times to coincide with Roanoke City Public Schools’ new 5th Quarter, a summer program to help sixth through eighth-graders recover from learning losses. In 2024 we will designate a performance of each Young Audiences production for children and teenagers in a growing community of families looking for events that address their special needs of autism and other behavioral disorders. First half of 2025 City of Roanoke Arts and Cultural Grant, passed on June 17, 2024 under ordinance 42951-061724.
