Any observations of the conversation? What popped up for you?

A sense of community made it enjoyable.
Memories came up sparked by the prompt and other stories.
There were several stories to choose from for each person.
Each focused on the higher goal.
Sometimes jobs were so hard that it was easiest to just get in and do it.
In each case we were richer for the culmination—all of the work added up.
The mundane in the process was worth it.
The small steps were worth it.
The process is also a reward
We have to fall in love with the process and celebrate it.

Any “a-has” or new discoveries?

The efforts we focused on included a sense of collaboration, accomplishment, and joy.
In each we also feel that we are pioneering new territory.
Looking back the rewards become more clear than they might be during the process.
We let the mundane and the overwhelming aspects of the process and path slow us down and prevent us from stepping up.

What themes emerged that we can apply to the next decade of arts and culture in Roanoke?

This is easy to tie to the community process.
Just do it — Don’t admire the problem
Celebrate the mistakes — we’ve got to honor the person stepping up and doing it
Celebrate the process steps
It’s okay to enjoy the process and path

The process is as important as the product, and looking back years from now, it will be the relationships among collaborators that stick with us. Even the mundane and very tough challenges — that we need to quit admiring and just start working on — are an opportunity for joy and celebration and lasting relationships. We can build these into projects, and the arts are a natural way to help us celebrate.
