Any observations of the conversation? What popped up for you?

– Prompt wasn’t neutral, positive spin, didn’t make as much space for negative
– Territorality and cutting down of others by traditional artists
– Trained, professional artist vs. community artist, art as living
– Hard to find pocket of people
– Need mentorship of young artists vs. glass ceilings keeping new artists out
* Welcome packet for new artists; pass to share art
– Many of us have been in the space of the elitism in art community (dance, painting, etc.)
– Time luck networking helped to find a welcoming group, “I am going to create something welcoming to others”
* Collaborate across art forms/genres
– “I expect art to bring us together” one noted
– Genuine vs. posturing connecting

Any “a-has” or new discoveries?

– Shift in the arts, less about name and technicalities. People seeing art can do so much more. What are the intangibles that art creates?
– Welcome packet idea — roll over classes in a woman’s highschool where she gets to try all the art forms. Connect with folks in your medium and across
– Find peope and sense of belonging
– Traditional arts community is towards adults, reciever, evenings, wine, not family friendly
– Opportunities — “Roanoke’s Got Talent” multi-faceted showcase of Roanoke artists, engaged activities; allow artist to be seen and make connections

What themes emerged that we can apply to the next decade of arts and culture in Roanoke?

– Finding a way to create community within space using talent already there and connections with intention to create something together
– There are a lot of these things happening! Challenge is knowing about them and getting them on the schedule. Another challenge, we are tired. Going to things after work is hard
– Way to do something beyond just in person to accomodate challenges? Other ways to access activities?
– It takes multiple times for people to feel connected in a space and circle. Social muscle; time it takes to build community
– Somehow everyone make a list of what they are as cultural contributors and see how people connect (can do so in movement)
– Artist nametag to ID what forms people like to explore; visually connect
